Citrus Bowl it is

Well, Georgia had one job. And they didn’t do it, so Penn State is not headed back to a New Year’s Six bowl game for the third straight season.

And I know that earlier in the year I said that anything less than a NY6 bowl would be a disappointing season.

But I’m going to back off that take a little bit. Maybe part of that is me trying to take back a bad take, or part of it that I’m trying to make myself feel better that the team isn’t going to a NY6 bowl, but either way I’m backing off that take. First because the Nittany Lions would be in a NY6 bowl if it weren’t for the conference tie-ins. They’re still a top-12 team. Plus, #12 vs. #14 matchup is not something to be super upset about.

It’s still okay to be disappointed, but when we look back on this season, it wasn’t a great one but it wasn’t a bad one.

Disappointed and upset are two different things. The Nittany Lions will still go to the best non-NY6 bowl game. And for the first time since 2011 they will actually play on New Year’s Day.

A win over Kentucky would give them a third straight 10-win season, something that the Nittany Lions haven’t accomplished since joining the Big Ten. So no, it’s not a NY6 bowl, but it is still a great bowl game and a win would cap off another very good season. Plus, given where Penn State’s football program was a few years ago, the Citrus Bowl is nothing to be upset about.
